Fashion is cyclical. For better or worse, we can always count on the old being new again. It is no surprise, then, that the fall 2010 runways reflected a sort of nostalgia. The catwalk was awash in re-imagined classics and pieces that nod to a bygone era of modest hemlines, lush textures, and feminine silhouettes.

As fall 2010 clothing lines are rolled out, it is clear that retro is, indeed, the way to go this season. It’s easier than ever to get the look — no digging through musty bins  or rummaging in your great aunt’s closet required. The savvy shopper knows that fall’s must-haves  are available at the click of a mouse.  Here are a few “e-tailers” (online retailers) that carry runway looks from well-known designers and a sampling of their vintage-inspired offerings.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Launched in 2000, saks.com offers “an enhanced, personalized, online shopping experience.” Shop at saks.com in many ways: by a distinct look, a specific designer, or an individual item.

Saks.com is committed to providing the same legendary service and style found in all Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

These Yves Saint Laurent wide-leg flannel pants are a comfy wool-cashmere blend with a cuffed hem and hidden button on the waistband. They recall the iconic Katharine Hepburn in her prime.

A rich red lip is never out of style. Sculpted red lips ruled the runway at Gucci, Vivienne Tam, and Herve Léger.

Additional details: Saks accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and Saks’ “Little Black Card.” Packages ship via FedEx.

Anthropologie

Anthropologie.com offers “a one-of-a-kind and compelling shopping experience that makes women feel beautiful, hopeful and connected.”

The "Mullany Dress" is cut in an always flattering A-line and is a great transitional piece you can take from summer to fall with a cardigan and tights.

The "Lincolnshire Skirt" is a sleek, updated pencil skirt in a prim and proper print. Ruffles add a bit of interest and texture. This wool blend also can be taken into autumn with simple clean layers. For now, pair it with the “Molded and Melded Tee” for a comfy, yet chic update on a '60s silhouette.

A kitten heel and delicate pointed toe give a demure twist to the classic “Fortnight Oxford” in a rich cognac hue. These beauties pair well with the “Mom’s Attic Clutch.”

Additional details: Anthropologie accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and Anthropologie gift cards.

Net-A-Porter

Since 2000, Net-A-Porter.com, a play on the French phrase meaning “ready to wear,” has sold current-season high fashion. The e-tailer’s site is styled as a fashion magazine and stocks such brands as Christian Louboutin, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, and Anna Sui.

You may have seen these red-soled stunners on the feet of Hollywood’s pretty young things. The in-demand Christian Louboutin brand is known for its well-made skyscraper heels but Louboutin makes a more manageable height. Elegant and knotted at the toe, this pale gold peep-toe sandal would be perfect for a holiday party.

These round Balenciaga sunglasses are very Jackie O and offer 100 percent UV protection.

This glamorous Oscar de la Renta is a navy and black silk-blend floral matelasse dress. The full skirt is complemented by a stunning halter, which is sure to get you noticed.

Additional details: Net-a-Porter accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Visa Debit, Visa Delta, Electron and JCB cards. All orders require signature on receipt and each order is insured during the time it is in transit until it is delivered to you.

House of Lavande

This vintage couture jewelry collection spans the 20th century from “1920s Machine Age Bakelite, atomic glam 1950s, to Studio 54-era Lucite and gold.” Designs range from the surreal to the simply elegant.

These coral earrings from the '50s have an almost tribal appeal.

This ornate 1950s-'60s-era multichain statement necklace is best worn as an accent to a simple cocktail dress or gown.

This 1950s' Florenza bracelet with a center peacock cabochon is surrounded by blue and green crystal, in a gold setting.

Additional details: House of Lavande accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards. You may also pay using a PayPal account. All packages ship as registered mail with insurance.

Chie Mihara

This footwear is designed by a woman for women, with a priority placed on design and comfort. Mihara draws on “vintage influences ranging from 1930s femininity to 1980s humor” and takes details from the past and reworks them to reflect contemporary aesthetics and modern fashion. The Spain-based designer’s entire Fall/Winter 2010-11 collection is heavily inspired by the 1940s.

Looks to try:

"Baikos" t-strap mary janes have a rounded toe, soft leather upper, and a substantial heel for added stability and comfort.

Jewel tones are an autumn mainstay and the "Kabel" heels will lend a pop of color and character to any ensemble.

Additional details: Chie Mihara accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.

C. Madeleine’s

A collection of truly vintage treasures, C. Madeleine’s showcases mint designer duds from the last century. Each piece is handpicked by owner Madeleine Kirsh and is of the highest quality. Once called “Miami’s best kept secret” by Vogue, the site now serves a worldwide customer base.

Looks to try:

Vintage Oscar de la Renta, this midnight blue chiffon gown is an obvious showstopper.

Additional details: Checkout is done via Google Checkout. C. Madeleine’s accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover; wire transfer and checks are also accepted.

Remember, when it comes to vintage, less is more. You don’t want to look like a time traveler or an extra for Mad Men. Keep it simple — mix classics and moderns with one vintage-y piece or accessory. Good luck and happy shopping!
