Mike Stone, owner of Stoney’s British Pub in Wilmington, presented a check to Susan D. Lloyd, President and C.E.O. of Delaware Hospice, in January 2011 containing the proceeds of his November fundraising efforts. The total: $7,500. And this year’s sizable contribution forms only a fraction of the whopping $40,000 the authentic British pub has raised for the hospice during the past decade.
Inspired by the treatment a member of his family received there more than ten years ago, Stone said of his generosity toward the state’s sole not-for-profit hospice, “They do such important work caring for patients and families each and every day; it’s a privilege to support their efforts in any way we can.” Benefit events hosted throughout November — the anniversary month of the pub — enable Stone’s support and ensure others can receive the end-of-life care that so impressed him.
This kindness is, of course, most welcome. “We are so grateful to Mike Stone and to his entire staff at Stoney’s British Pub, who work so hard each year to make these fundraising events a success,” said Lloyd, on behalf of the hospice. “This type of passionate and dedicated support helped establish Delaware Hospice 28 years ago and has allowed us to continue meeting the needs of the community ever since.”
Gifts like Stone’s also aid community programs outside the hospice, such as New Hope, which helps children and teens in times of loss, and Transitions, which supports seriously ill individuals for whom hospice care is not appropriate. So whenever you’re in the area, be sure to stop in for some of Stoney’s famous fish and chips and support more than a business.
