Christmas at Hagley

Share

Turn to pastimes from the past for inspiration when adorning your home for this year’s holidays. The 1803 du Pont ancestral home, Eleutherian Mills in Wilmington, is decorated for Christmas and demonstrates how families spent their leisure time at Christmas 200  years ago.

Picture the du Pont family in the winter sitting together to play backgammon, reading, listening to music or drawing. Girls could practice sewing techniques.  Children could entertain themselves by layering different colored sands in a glass bottle. In the Terrace Room, notice the ice skates and sled waiting to be used on a snowy slope.

“Christmas at Hagley” provides an intimate look into the common winter activities of the 19th and early 20th century. Visit the Hagley store – decorated for the season and filled with a unique selection of books, gifts, hand-crafted pieces, and children’s items – and get a little shopping done, too.
