It’s not every day that a garden lover can explore 83 stunning gardens. This weekend, grab a friend and come to Wilmington for a free garden tour and a discounted meal!

Rain-or-shine, tour participants can view gardens of Wilmington residents, churches, schools, restaurants, and community groups to experience their lovely scents and sights. Take advantage of opportunities to talk directly to the gardeners who cultivated these fabulous urban gardenscapes.

Before or after the tour, enjoy a discounted meal at one of the participating local restaurants, Toscana to Go, Extreme Pizza, Kid Shelleen’s, Bain’s Deli, Moveable Feast, Blue Parrot Bar & Grill, and Wilmington Wine Co.

City Gardens Contest & People’s Choice Tour, established in 1980, strove to inspire individuals to garden and increase a sense of community in a fun way. Previously, volunteer judges peeked behind private fences, but for the first time last year, to celebrate the event’s 30th anniversary, the public was invited to join. Due to last year’s popularity, the tour is now a two-day event, free of charge, and has maps available at area Lowe’s, Bloomsbury Flowers, or here by downloading a printable map.

This is a friendly competition and registered attendees? votes decide each district’s winner; polling ends on June 30. Judges evaluate gardens on the following categories: Home Gardener — flower, vegetable, entrance, or container; Community Gardener (groups, schools, churches, businesses) — flower or vegetable. On September 12, 2013, the winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony at TheDCH from 7-8.30pm.
