The Kennett Symphony will present Guitarra – An Evening of Classical and Flamenco Guitar, Song and Dance! on Saturday, June 23, at 7:30pm (Rain date: June 24). Guitarra will be held in the Open Air Theatre of the Longwood Gardens, and performed under the direction of Maestra Mary Woodmansee Green.
Special guests include classical and flamenco guitarist and flamenco singer Marija Temo and flamenco dancer Ulrika Frank. The concert will begin with a tribute to the great Spanish writer and poet, Garcia Lorca, by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas. Frank will then join Temo as she sings and plays flamenco guitar in Manuel deFalla’s El Amor Brujo (“The Love Sorcerer”), which includes the well-known “Ritual Fire Dance.” After the concert, a special light installation will illuminate the Longwood Gardens.
Marija Temo, described as a “triple threat,” is widely recognized as a virtuoso classical-flamenco guitarist, flamenco vocalist and dancer, and conductor. She artfully combines her unique flamenco and classical talents in performance with symphony orchestras, as well as in solo guitar concert performances and festivals. Temo plays a “Marija Temo” model flamenco/classical hybrid guitar, which she designed with luthier Tom Rodriguez.
Ulrika Frank studied dance in her native Sweden at the University College of Dance in Stockholm, where she majored in flamenco, modern, jazz and character dance.
As a duo, Temo and Frank recently premiered Mano a Mano (“Hand to Hand”), a unified program of flamenco, classical and contemporary styles in guitar, singing and dance in Flamenco Festivals throughout the United States and in Managua, Nicaragua.
Longwood Gardens will present the exhibition, Light: Installations by UK light artist Bruce Munro, from June 9-September 29. Munro’s first garden installation in the US, the show will feature seven large-scale outdoor installations, two installations within Longwood’s grand four-acre Conservatory, a small collection of illuminated sculptures in the historic Music Room, and will showcase never-before-seen views of Longwood at night.
Enjoy this special concert at Longwood Gardens – ticket price includes free parking, all-day admission to the gardens and post concert light show. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.
