A Weekend of Fun(gi)

Share

For Kennett Square, Pa., early September means hosting one of Southern Chester County’s most fun and widely recognized events: The Mushroom Festival.

The Mushroom Capital of the World welcomes thousands of locals and visitors to celebrate Kennett Square’s most lucrative cash crop. Featured on The Food Network”s show, “All-American Festivals,” this famous event draws a diverse crowd of families and friends looking to enjoy food and fun, as well as mushroom connoisseurs interested in gleaning more knowledge from specialty chefs and growers. Enjoy a variety of informative, delicious, and interactive events for all ages that tout the health benefits of mushrooms, educate you about the mushroom industry, and promote tourism in Southern Chester County.

The fun begins on Friday, September 9 at 6pm with a community parade through the streets of Kennett Square. Then, enjoy food, games, and rides at an old-fashioned carnival held in the Genesis parking lot. End the night with a dance party from 8pm-11pm featuring hit music from the year 1998 hosted by Tommy McCarthy. On Saturday, September 10 from 10am-7pm, events include a 1pm cooking demonstration in the Special Events tent with Jose Garces, celebrity chef and winner of the second season of “The Next Iron Chef.” From 3pm-11pm, enjoy another afternoon and evening at the old-fashioned carnival to complement your day of mushrooms. The final day of the Mushroom Festival ends the weekend with a bang on Sunday, Sept 11 with a 5K run/walk at 7am in front of Kennett High School to support breast cancer research. Attend various events such as a soup and wine tasting, mushroom judging, and a juggling performance from 10am-5pm.

Purchase tickets for $2 per person (ages 12 and up) at the festival entrances and parking lots or in advance from The Mushroom Cap in Kennett Square. Admission proceeds support the Mushroom Festival’s grant program, which gave $70,000 to more than 30 non-profit organizations last year.
