Imagine Greek mythology, Asian influences and ancient art techniques intertwining to create one incredible combination of artwork. Waxen paintings, mixed media illustrations and bronzed sculptures give the viewer plenty to ponder at Somerville Manning Gallery, where a “Mystical Shores” exhibit is featuring female artists Betsy Eby, Jane Pack and Olivia Musgrave.
Following an opening reception on March 5 from 5:30-7:30pm, the exhibit runs from March 6-April 3.
Betsy Eby works in encaustic painting — the ancient art of layering pigmented wax to create an illustration. The Tokyo resident’s paintings are influenced by her interest in Greek, Roman and Asian culture.
Jane Pack lives in Greece and has taught painting at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts for 20 years. The use of ink and paint in her work gives her landscaping portraits a haunting depth.
Olivia Musgrave is Irish-born but now lives and works out of London. She draws her inspiration from Greek and Irish mythology. Her bronze sculptures usually feature Amazon women riding horses and in positions of confidence and power.
Somerville Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. For more information, call 302.652.0271 or visit www.somervillemanning.com.
