Nearly 600 people attended the Brandywine Valley Association’s 5th Annual Polar Plunge on Saturday, which raised more than $15,800 for the watershed organization. About 160 plungers braved the icy waters of the Brandywine Creek and helped the nonprofit promote awareness of its conservation efforts in the watershed.
The lively crowd gathered while it was snowing with water temperatures registering at a seasonably warm 43 degrees Fahrenheit. Folks stayed warm with hot chili by the bonfire and listened to music until they disrobed to take the plunge.
Golden Plunger Awards went to Kathy Miller of West Chester, Pa., who raised nearly $700, and The Longwood Rotary/Unionville High School Interact Team, which raised $1,061. Best costume went to Connie Nye Shapiro’s Team, The Pirates of the Brandywine. The award for largest group plunging went to Bayard Rustin High School’s boys lacrosse team with 16 members who took the plunge.
