More than 600 people turned out to for the Polar Bear Plunge, and 160 of them actually braved the icy waters of the Brandywine on Feb. 12, 2011. The event raised more than $16,000 for the nonprofit Brandywine Valley Association and increased awareness about the watershed. Temperature at the time was 35 degrees.
For the second year in a row, April Filiault of West Chester received the Golden Plunger Award for raising $1500, while the Longwood Rotary/Unionville High School Interact Team took home the award for their group effort raising $1,104.
Mike Murphy of the Fugett Fools Team won best costume for his Tutu Coconut Princess, and the award for largest group went to the 25-member We Are Penn State team.
